    China crash involving Huawei-backed Aito electric vehicle kills 3

    Aito Automobile, a new energy vehicle brand launched in 2022, is investigating the accident along with traffic police, the company said on its WeChat and Weibo social media accounts on Sunday.

    Aito said data from the vehicle showed it was operating at a speed of 115 kph (71 mph) at the time of Friday's accident, adding that the airbag opened normally and readings from the battery pack were normal.

    Video on social media showed bystanders trying to break the window and door of the SUV as it was lodged under the truck with the front of the vehicle engulfed in flames.

    The Aito M7, made by Seres Group in partnership with Huawei, with Huawei providing technology for the vehicle and help with marketing.

    Singapore's power supply is set to receive a boost with two new generators, according to a press release by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) on Monday (April 29).

    The Fast Start generators would be able to achieve this balance as it can be started up quickly, thus mitigating risks of disruption.

    PacificLight Power's Fast Start units will be hydrogen-ready gas turbine units, which present a clean alternative to fossil fuels.

    Meranti's new Fast Start units are expected to be operational in June 2025.

    Thai court adds jail time for rights lawyer who urged monarchy reform

    BANGKOK — A Thai court sentenced a prominent jailed activist lawyer on Monday (April 29) to a further two years in prison for royal insults relating to a speech he made at a 2021 protest, his lawyer said.

    The latest sentence was ordered to run consecutively which means Arnon will now serve 10 years and 20 days, according to legal aid group Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.

    Thailand's lese-majeste law, one of the world's toughest, protects the monarchy from criticism and carries a maximum jail sentence of up to 15 years for each perceived royal insult.

    At least 272 people have been charged with lese-majeste offences since 2020, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.

    Death toll in severe food poisoning outbreak at Malaysian restaurant in Taipei rises to 4

    Another person has died of suspected food poisoning on April 29 after reportedly dining at a Malaysian vegetarian restaurant in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, local media reported.

    This brings the number of fatalities involved in the Polam Kopitiam food poisoning outbreak to four, Taiwan's Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare Victor Wang confirmed on April 29.

    In March, two men had died from suspected food poisoning after dining at the eatery.

    A lethal toxin suspected to be behind the fatal food poisoning outbreak was found in the stool of the restaurant's chef.

    Stating that the room is furnished with a built-in wardrobe, fan, table, Ken wrote: "The room is cosy, clean, and well-maintained.".

    Room listings that indicate female tenants only are usually only posted by female landlords.

    "It is somewhat dodgy that he is seeking only female tenants," he said.

    KUALA LUMPUR — KFC has reduced its operations in Malaysia, shuttering more than 100 restaurants temporarily after months of a persistent pro-Palestine boycott of US-linked businesses triggered by the ongoing war in Gaza.

    There are more than 600 KFC restaurants in Malaysia, according to the QSR website.

    QSR also operates KFC restaurants in Singapore, Brunei and Cambodia, as well as more than 480 Pizza Hut stores in Malaysia and Singapore.

    Selangor, the most industrialised state in Malaysia, has 11 branches temporarily closed, 10 of which are located in Malay-majority Shah Alam.
