News & Opinion Electoral Boundaries Candidate Profiles Multimedia

Choose a candidate for his character

I AM 50 years old and have seen a number of elections. As a voter, I would like to have a good checklist so that I can assess the candidates objectively. The media can help in this area.

There will be many issues that can be emotional. However, I believe there is enough goodness in Singaporeans for them to vote for the big picture, even if it means having to sacrifice individual benefits.

The danger is that charm works well in a short campaigning period but character takes a long time to be seen. Before we vote, we should ask: 'While I may be charmed by the candidate, do I know his character?' If we are not sure, we should ask questions until we get the answer.

Choosing an MP is more important than choosing a housing agent to sell my flat. I should exercise the same due diligence.

A candidate's character is of prime importance; all other issues are secondary. Singaporeans deserve the best to serve the nation.
